A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Split into 3 to 4 meals per day with a growth food for small dogs to support development without excess.
Adult : Divide the ration into 2 daily meals and adjust it according to activity, body condition and the energy density of the food.
Senior : Choose a formula that is easier to digest and monitor weight, muscle mass and overall comfort.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Premium kibble for an active small dog generally suits very well, provided it offers good-quality proteins, controlled energy density and excellent digestibility. In sensitive subjects, a skin and coat-oriented formula may be of interest on veterinary advice.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily ration depends on weight, age, sterilization, activity and the energy density of the chosen food. It is preferably divided into two meals to promote good digestive comfort and better regularity.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 7 - 8 kg | 110 - 130 g | 2 |
| 8 - 9 kg | 120 - 145 g | 2 |
| 9 - 10 kg | 130 - 160 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change of food must be gradual over a period of about one week, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. This transition limits digestive upsets and allows a calmer assessment of skin and digestive tolerance.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Good hydration is particularly important during hot weather, after exercise and in dogs fed exclusively with a dry diet.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats can be useful for training, but they must remain moderate and be included in the calculation of the overall ration. It is better to favor small, simple and well-tolerated rewards, given at the right time.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the ration precisely rather than estimating it by eye.
- Limit treats to avoid excess calorie intake.
- Adapt the food in case of skin sensitivity with the veterinarian's advice.
- Split into two meals for better digestive regularity.
Never give
Chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, avocado, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones and yeast dough are dangerous for dogs and can cause severe digestive, neurological, blood or kidney disorders. In case of ingestion, you should quickly contact a veterinarian.
