Sealyham Terrier: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The Sealyham Terrier originates from Wales, in the United Kingdom. Its development is associated with the Sealyham House estate, in Pembrokeshire, where John Owen Tucker-Edwardes selected in the mid-19th century a stocky, courageous and energetic terrier intended for hunting, notably otters. The breed enjoyed strong popularity in the interwar period and distinguished itself at major international dog shows.

The Sealyham Terrier is a small sturdy dog, longer than it is tall, with a straight back and a well-developed chest. Its head is long, the skull slightly domed, the jaw powerful and the nose black. Its coat is long, harsh on the outer coat, with a dense undercoat that protects it well from bad weather. The coat is predominantly white, sometimes marked on the head or ears.

Active, courageous and well-balanced, the Sealyham Terrier combines the typical liveliness of terriers with a friendly and affectionate temperament. Very attached to its owner, it likes to take part in family life and can be alert, strong-willed and sometimes stubborn. It appreciates children when they respect its interactions and retains a well-present hunting instinct.

The Sealyham Terrier adapts just as well to life in the city as in the countryside, provided it benefits from sufficient daily outings. It can live in an apartment thanks to its small size, but it needs to get exercise, to play and to remain mentally stimulated. Its alert side makes it readily barky and a good watchdog.

Its training must start early and remain consistent, firm and respectful. Like many terriers, the Sealyham Terrier has character and can be independent, which requires consistency in learning. Recall, self-control and early socialization are particularly important to channel its hunting instinct and promote good balance.

The Sealyham Terrier is overall a small, sturdy dog, well protected against cold and bad weather thanks to its solid build and dense undercoat. It nevertheless requires regular monitoring of the eyes, ears and skin, as certain sensitivities occur more often in the breed.
