Diet

Feeding your Pekingese well

China

The Pekingese’s diet must be of good quality and adapted to its small size as well as to its moderate activity level. A balanced formula helps preserve its weight, its skin, the quality of its coat and its overall comfort.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : A diet for a growing small breed, divided into several meals, helps support development without excess weight.

  • Adult : A premium formula for a small dog with a controlled ration suits its moderate activity well and its tendency to gain weight.

  • Senior : A more digestible food, moderate in calories and adapted to joint and oral comfort is often preferable.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

Premium kibble for small dogs, adapted to its age and body condition, generally suits the Pekingese very well. A formula promoting oral and dental health and weight control is particularly relevant for this breed.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount must be adjusted according to actual weight, age, sterilization and activity level. As the Pekingese is not very energy-consuming and easily greedy, the ration must be precisely measured with the veterinarian's advice if needed.

WeightDaily amountMeals/day
3 - 4 kg80 - 116 g2
4 - 4 kg92 - 134 g2
4 - 5 kg103 - 151 g2

Change

Managing the food transition

Any change in diet must be done gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. Gradually mixing the old food and the new one remains the best approach.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must always be available. In hot weather, vigilance must be increased, because the Pekingese tolerates heat poorly and can quickly become uncomfortable.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be included in the daily ration. It is better to favor small, simple rewards rather than overly rich extras that promote weight gain.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh the portion rather than pouring it in at random.
  • Limit treats and table scraps.
  • Split the daily portion into 2 meals.
  • Adjust the diet with the veterinarian in case of overweight.

Never give

As with other dogs, chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, avocado, alcohol, cooked bones, xylitol and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause severe digestive disorders, poisoning or metabolic complications.
