Jack Russell Terrier: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The Jack Russell Terrier has its origins in 19th-century England. It was created by Reverend John "Jack" Russell, an English pastor passionate about hunting, who was looking for a dog capable of running fast but also of going underground to flush out foxes and game in burrows. Two varieties then formed, the Parson Russell Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier, and the breed standard was established in 2000.

The Jack Russell Terrier has a body slightly longer than it is tall, with a well-defined neck and a muscular chest. Its silhouette is reminiscent of that of the Fox Terrier. It has V-shaped ears falling forward, small, dark, almond-shaped eyes, as well as a flat skull that tapers towards the eyes and the muzzle. Its tail hangs at rest and rises in action. The coat is predominantly white with black or tan patches.

The Jack Russell Terrier is an alert, energetic, intelligent, lively and courageous dog. Confident, he displays an assertive temperament and a strong personality. Kind, friendly and affectionate with his owner, he also enjoys family life and can be a good play companion for children, despite a very pronounced hunting instinct.

The Jack Russell Terrier needs a lot of exercise to channel its energy. It must be taken out several times a day and enjoys games as well as sporting activities. It adapts to the city, but does not cope well with a life that is too sedentary or a solitary daily routine in an apartment. Its ideal living environment remains a house with a garden, where it can expend energy freely.

With the Jack Russell Terrier, you should favor reward-based training. Its activity sometimes makes it not very attentive over time, hence the benefit of using games and short commands to maintain its concentration. It learns well when the method is consistent, with firmness without harshness and real consistency in the requests.

A LOF-bred Jack Russell Terrier is often priced between €1,000 and €1,500 depending on the lineage, the type (smooth, broken or rough coat) and the screenings. The training and activity budget quickly exceeds the purchase price.

The Jack Russell Terrier is a small dog that is generally robust, but it can be exposed to several hereditary diseases, sometimes favored by inbreeding. Some individuals may also show hyperactivity that is difficult to channel. Like many small dogs, it requires particular attention to oral hygiene, notably to limit the buildup of tartar.

The diet of the Jack Russell Terrier must be adapted to its level of activity. A very active dog does not have the same needs as a more homebody individual. This breed can be given good-quality commercial food, in the form of kibble or wet food.
