A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Small dog growth food, in three meals, with lots of educational play rather than too many treats.
Adult : Energy ration on very active days, more measured at rest to stay slim.
Senior : Digestible food, while monitoring teeth, weight and mobility.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
High-quality kibble or wet food are suitable for the Jack Russell Terrier, provided they are chosen according to its age, activity and body condition.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily ration must be adapted to its lifestyle and divided into 2 meals per day.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 5 - 6 kg | 90 - 130 g | 2 |
| 6 - 7 kg | 110 - 150 g | 2 |
| 7 - 8 kg | 125 - 170 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change of food must be gradual over seven to ten days. In this terrier, sometimes sensitive in terms of digestion, an abrupt change easily promotes diarrhea or digestive upset.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Fresh water must remain available at all times. Needs increase after exertion, intense play and in hot weather.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats are mainly used for training and remain small. They must not exceed 10% of the ration: this lively dog quickly gains weight if it is rewarded too much.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Adjust the daily ration to the dog's activity level.
- Choose high-quality kibble or wet food.
- Divide the food into 2 meals per day.
Never give
Chocolate, grapes, xylitol, onion, garlic, alcohol, caffeine, cooked bones and very fatty leftovers are dangerous. In case of ingestion, contact a veterinarian without delay.
