Diet

Feeding your Brussels Griffon well

Belgium

The Griffon Bruxellois needs a complete, high-quality diet, designed for small dogs, in order to meet its needs without excess energy intake. Nutritional density, digestibility and kibble size matter as much as the amount served.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Split the ration into 3 to 4 meals per day and choose a growth food for small dogs in order to support harmonious development.

  • Adult : Generally serve 2 meals per day with a ration adjusted to ideal weight, activity and neutering.

  • Senior : Gradually adapt the energy density and support mobility, digestion and oral health with the veterinarian's advice.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

Premium kibble for small dogs, adapted to age, activity level and body condition, generally works very well. A home-prepared or mixed ration can also be considered if it is formulated rigorously with the help of a veterinarian.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount depends mainly on the exact weight, sterilization, activity and the energy density of the food. In this small breed, a few extra grams over time can already result in a visible weight gain.

WeightDaily amountMeals/day
3 - 4 kg55 - 75 g2
4 - 5 kg70 - 90 g2
5 - 6 kg85 - 105 g2

Change

Managing the food transition

Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. It is recommended to gradually increase the proportion of the new food while observing appetite, stool quality and digestive comfort.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. In summer, after walks and in the case of dry feeding, vigilance regarding hydration is particularly important.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be included in the daily caloric intake. It is better to favor small rewards that are easy to split in order to work on training without unbalancing the ration.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh the ration rather than estimating it by eye.
  • Reduce treats on days with lower activity.
  • Split into two meals for better digestive comfort.
  • Reassess the ration with each change in weight or lifestyle.

Never give

As with other dogs, you should avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones and very fatty foods, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or more serious complications.
