A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Choose a complete diet for a large-breed puppy and control the growth rate in order to protect the joints.
Adult : Adjust the energy density and the ration to the actual level of exercise, which is very variable in this scenthound.
Senior : Preserve muscle mass while adjusting calories to the decrease in activity and monitoring kidney and joint functions.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
A complete diet for a large active dog, in the form of quality kibble or a home-prepared ration formulated by a veterinarian, is suitable provided it covers its needs in proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins without excess energy.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily quantity must be calculated based on weight, body condition, age, sterilization and actual expenditure. The manufacturer's indications constitute a starting point to be adjusted with the veterinarian and the evolution of the silhouette.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 25 - 28 kg | 411 - 563 g | 2 |
| 28 - 31 kg | 453 - 620 g | 2 |
| 31 - 34 kg | 495 - 677 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change in diet must be carried out gradually over about a week, increasing the proportion of the new food while decreasing the old one, in order to limit digestive upsets.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Fresh water must remain available at all times, particularly after long outings, in hot weather and when feeding dry food. After an intense effort, let the dog recover and drink without excessive haste.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats can support training and recall, but they must be small in size and integrated into the daily energy intake. For this very active dog, rewarding with play or activity can also be effective.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Split the daily ration into two meals.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
- Check the weight and body condition every month.
- Deduct treats from the daily ration.
Never give
Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic in toxic quantities, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very salty or very fatty foods are to be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive lesions or serious metabolic disorders.
