Diet

Feeding your American Water Spaniel well

United States

The American Water Dog needs a complete, digestible diet adapted to its age, its activity and its body condition. An adult generally weighs from 11 to 20 kg. The quality of the ration and weight control protect digestion and joints.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.

  • Adult : Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.

  • Senior : Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

Complete, quality kibble for a medium-sized dog, possibly combined with a wet portion, is generally well suited. A home-prepared ration should only be considered with the advice of a veterinary nutritionist.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount depends on the density of the food, the ideal weight, sterilization and actual activity. An adult generally weighs from 11 to 20 kg. The manufacturer's guidelines serve as a starting point, then the ration is adjusted according to body condition.

14 - 17 kg278 - 381 g2

Change

Managing the food transition

Any change of food must be gradual over seven to ten days, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food to limit digestive disorders.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times. Needs increase with heat, exertion and a dry diet. Take water along on walks and offer regular breaks.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats remain occasional and represent less than 10% of the daily energy intake. They are deducted from the ration in order to avoid weight gain.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
  • Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
  • Deduct training treats from the daily ration.

Never give

Chocolate, grapes, xylitol, onion, garlic, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods are dangerous for dogs. In case of ingestion, contact a veterinarian quickly.
