Diet

Feeding your Greenland Dog well

Greenland

The diet must be rich in quality proteins and adapted to age, size, body condition and above all activity level. The needs of a working sled dog are clearly higher than those of an animal at rest.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Choose a formula for large-breed puppies and ensure steady growth without excessive energy intake.

  • Adult : Adjust the energy density and daily ration to the season as well as to the intensity of the work.

  • Senior : Maintain quality proteins while adjusting calories to the decrease in activity and joint condition.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

A complete diet for a large active dog, with high energy density when work requires it, is suitable provided that it supplies quality animal proteins and an appropriate mineral balance. The choice between kibble, wet ration or home-prepared ration must be validated according to the activity and, for a home ration, formulated with a veterinarian.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount must be determined based on the energy density of the food, the actual weight, the body condition, the season and the workload. The manufacturer's guidelines must be adjusted with the veterinarian and divided into several meals.

WeightDaily amountMeals/day
30 - 34 kg350 - 450 g2
35 - 38 kg400 - 500 g2

Change

Managing the food transition

Any change in diet must be gradual over about one week, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. A slower transition may be necessary for a sensitive dog or during a period of intense work.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Fresh water must remain available at all times, including in cold weather and during travel. During prolonged exertion, regularly offer small amounts and monitor recovery as well as signs of dehydration.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats should remain occasional, be included in the daily energy intake and serve primarily for training. Small, digestible and protein-rich rewards help avoid unbalancing the ration.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Divide the daily ration into at least two meals.
  • Avoid intense exertion just before and after the meal.
  • Regularly monitor body condition and weight.
  • Adjust energy intake to the actual workload.

Never give

Avoid in particular chocolate, xylitol, fresh or dried grapes, onion, garlic in quantity, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts and cooked bones, which can cause poisoning, digestive disorders or internal injuries. Any questionable food ingested warrants prompt veterinary advice.
