The Labrador Retriever breeding program from Dragon Valley in Wabern pursues a clearly defined breeding goal. The focus is on the further development of the breed as well as preserving desirable breed-typical characteristics, health and a well-established temperament. The parent dogs are examined, among other things, for HD, ED, OCD, eye diseases and, by means of genetic tests, for PRA and myopathy. The dogs’ temperament traits are also highly valued: The Labradors complete a temperament test and receive breeding approval. In addition to their use in breeding, they are trained and meaningfully occupied. In this way, the breeding program emphasizes its conviction that a well-exercised dog has the best prerequisites for a contented life. Puppies are born in the house and grow up there in the company of adult dogs. The breeding program points out that, despite careful selection, the subsequent health and character development cannot be fully guaranteed. After their litters, females are allowed to enjoy their retirement early; some older dogs find a suitable new home as a second dog.
