Napoleon / Minuet: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The Napoléon, today often called Minuet, is an American breed created by crossing the Munchkin and the Persian (sometimes the Exotic). The goal was a dwarf cat with a gentle, round face, with a variable coat. The breed is not recognized everywhere and remains debated because of the short legs. In France, it is still rare. A serious breeding program avoids extremes of flat face and documents locomotion.

Small cat, elongated Munchkin body, round head inspired by the Persian, large eyes, small to medium ears. The legs are clearly shortened. The coat can be short or long. The coat colors are very varied, including colourpoint. The gait is low, the back must not be arched in pain.

Cuddly, playful at times, very people-oriented. It adapts well to apartment living and to other cats. Children must learn not to carry it any which way. It is not a free-roaming outdoor cat.

He plays on the ground, runs, slips through. High jumps are more limited: provide step-like access. Brushing depends on coat length. Excess weight immediately worsens the strain on the legs.

Habituation to care, to gentle handling, to a litter box with suitable edges (not too high). Rewards work. Avoid games that make him jump from too high.

A Minuet / Napoléon is often priced between 1 000 and 2 200 euros. Rarity and looks do not excuse the absence of health guarantees.

Two issues dominate: locomotion linked to short legs (lordosis, discomfort) and fragilities inherited from the Persian (eyes, breathing, kidneys). A kitten that is too low, too flat-faced or already stiff is not a good choice. Veterinary follow-up must be regular.

The Napoléon / Minuet needs a complete, digestible diet adjusted to its age, activity and body condition. Protein quality and control of energy intake matter as much as the volume of the ration.

The name Napoléon has been abandoned by several associations in favor of Minuet. It is seen a lot on social networks because of its low silhouette. This popularity does not take away anything from the questions of locomotor health.
