Lagotto Romagnolo: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient water dog from the Po Valley, used to retrieve game in the marshes of Romagna. When the wetlands were drained, hunters redirected its olfactory qualities toward truffle hunting. The breed was rebuilt and made official in Italy at the end of the 20th century, then recognized by the FCI. It remains today the most emblematic truffle dog in Europe, while also becoming an appreciated family companion.

It is a medium-sized dog, rustic and almost square, with a broad skull, a rather short muzzle and round eyes with an attentive expression. The ears are triangular and carried drooping. The woolly, curly and dense coat forms a fleece that protects from water and brambles. The coat can be off-white, orange, brown, roan or spotted. The tail is carried in a sabre shape.

Lively, affectionate and very human-oriented, the Lagotto likes to learn and search. He is generally sociable with children and other dogs when he is well socialized. His exceptional sense of smell drives him to explore the ground constantly. He is neither a molosser nor an impressive guard dog, but he readily alerts.

He needs daily outings, scent games and regular contact with his family. Apartment living is possible if he is sufficiently occupied and brushed. Boredom encourages barking and destruction. He enjoys water, varied walks and search workshops.

Gifted and cooperative, he responds very well to positive reinforcement. Short, varied and scent-based sessions give excellent results. Recall must be worked on early, because his sense of smell can absorb him. Broad socialization avoids overly strong excitement outdoors.

A companion Lagotto Romagnolo from a well-monitored breeding program is often between 1 200 and 2 200 euros. Working truffle-hunting or show lines may exceed this range.

It is a generally sturdy dog, with a coat that requires more maintenance than heavy medical care. Some lines may present hereditary neurological or ocular conditions. A serious breeder offers the relevant tests and careful socialization.

The Lagotto Romagnolo needs a complete, digestible diet adjusted to its age, activity and body condition. Protein quality and control of energy intake matter as much as the volume of the ration.

The name Lagotto comes from the Romagnol dialect and refers to the water dog. It is one of the rare breeds selected specifically for truffle. Its curly coat, if not maintained, mats like a sheep's fleece.
