Diet

Feeding your Spinone Italiano well

Italy

The Spinone needs a complete, balanced, good-quality diet, adapted to its age, weight and activity level. An enduring and athletic dog, it benefits from a regular ration that supports muscle mass without promoting overweight.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.

  • Adult : Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to the ideal weight and actual activity.

  • Senior : Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

Premium kibble for medium to large dogs works well in most cases, with a formula adapted to the individual's activity level and digestive sensitivity. Digestibility, protein quality, and control of energy intake are important points.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily quantity must be defined according to weight, body condition, activity and the energy density of the chosen food. In the Spinone, it is preferable to think in terms of a measured ration rather than free-feeding.

WeightDaily amountMeals/day

31 - 34 kg495 - 677 g2

Change

Managing the food transition

Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive disorders. The introduction of the new food is done in stages by gradually increasing its proportion.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must be available at all times, especially after exertion, in hot weather or after a hunting outing. Good hydration contributes to digestive comfort and recovery.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats can be useful for training and recall, provided they remain moderate and are included in the calculation of the daily ration. It is preferable to favor simple, digestible rewards given at the right time.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
  • Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
  • Deduct training treats from the daily ration.

Never give

As with all dogs, chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, avocado, alcohol, xylitol, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause digestive disorders that are sometimes serious, or even poisoning.
