The Spinone descends from ancient wire-haired hunting dogs present in Italy for centuries. Dogs close to the breed already appear in medieval depictions, then in works of the Italian Renaissance, notably in Mantua. Selected to work on difficult terrain, it established itself as an enduring, versatile and reliable pointing dog.

The Spinone is a medium to large-sized dog, solid, well-proportioned and muscular.
