A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
Adult : Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.
Senior : Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Complete premium kibble for an active medium-sized dog generally suits well, with a digestible composition and an appropriate protein intake. During periods of sustained activity, the ration can be adjusted with the veterinarian's advice in order to properly cover energy needs.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount must be defined according to weight, body condition, age and exercise intensity. It is preferable to adjust the ration gradually by observing the silhouette, endurance and stool quality.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 18 - 20 kg | 336 - 461 g | 2 |
| 20 - 23 kg | 341 - 468 g | 2 |
| 23 - 25 kg | 373 - 512 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change in diet must be carried out gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A slow transition makes it possible to check good tolerance of the new food and to adjust the quantities without upsetting the body.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Hydration deserves special attention after exertion, in hot weather or upon returning from a long outing outdoors.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats can be useful in training and recall, provided they remain moderate and are included in the daily caloric intake. It is preferable to choose simple, digestible rewards reserved for moments of learning or effort.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
- Avoid intense exertion just before and after the meal.
- Deduct training treats from the daily ration.
Never give
As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, alcohol, xylitol, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods, as they can cause serious digestive disorders, poisoning or metabolic complications.
