Diet

Feeding your Norwegian Lundehund well

Norway

The Norwegian Lundehund needs a complete, digestible, good-quality diet, adapted to its size, its age and its activity level. Given the digestive sensitivity described in the breed, regularity and the choice of well-tolerated ingredients are particularly important.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : The puppy needs a highly digestible growth food, given in several small meals in order to support its growth without overloading its digestion.

  • Adult : The adult benefits from a stable ration, adapted to its activity, generally divided into two daily meals to limit digestive variations.

  • Senior : The senior often benefits from a diet that is more controlled in energy and very digestible, with regular monitoring of weight and overall condition.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

Premium kibble for a small active dog or a balanced ration validated by a veterinarian are well suited, provided that digestibility and consistency are prioritized. Frequent changes of brand or composition should be avoided in sensitive subjects.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount must be adjusted according to the dog's weight, activity, age and body condition, then preferably divided into two meals. Regular observation of the silhouette and stools helps to check that the ration suits him.

Change

Managing the food transition

Any dietary transition must be gradual, ideally over at least a week, or even longer in sensitive dogs. An introduction that is too rapid increases the risk of digestive disorders.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must be available at all times. Increased attention is useful after exercise, in hot weather and during any digestive episode.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats should remain moderate and represent a small part of the daily intake. It is better to choose simple, digestible rewards that are easy to portion so as not to unbalance the ration.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh the ration rather than measuring it approximately.
  • Introduce any new food gradually.
  • Regularly monitor stool quality and body condition.

Never give

As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones and overly fatty leftovers should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning or worsen digestive issues that are already sensitive in the breed.
