Diet

Feeding your Russo-European Laika well

Russia

The diet of the Russo-European Laika must support an active, muscular and enduring dog. It must be of good quality, easily digestible and adjusted to age, weight, activity level and season.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.

  • Adult : Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.

  • Senior : Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

Premium complete kibble for an active medium-sized dog is generally suitable, with an appropriate content of animal proteins and fats. The ration must be reviewed according to the intensity of the effort, the outside temperature and the body condition.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount varies depending on size, activity and individual metabolism. It is preferable to rely on body condition, the manufacturer's recommendations and the veterinarian's advice rather than on a fixed ration.

Change

Managing the food transition

Any dietary change must be made gradually over several days in order to avoid digestive upsets. A gentle transition also makes it possible to check good tolerance of the new formula.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, with increased vigilance after exercise, in hot weather or during prolonged travel.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and included in the calculation of the daily ration. They are especially useful as a motivation tool during training and recall.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Adjust the ration to the dog's actual activity and to the season.
  • Split the daily ration into at least two meals for digestive comfort.
  • Regularly monitor body condition to preserve healthy joints.

Never give

As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones and very fatty foods, as they can cause serious poisoning or sometimes severe digestive disorders.
