A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Choose a growth food for small dogs, split into 3 to 4 meals depending on age, with regular weight monitoring.
Adult : Provide a measured ration in 2 meals per day and adjust it according to actual activity and body condition.
Senior : Reassess calorie intake, digestibility and veterinary follow-up if activity decreases or if sensitivities appear.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
A premium dry food for an active small dog suits the Fox Terrier well, with a good level of animal proteins and an energy density adapted to its sporty temperament. The ration must always be reassessed according to age, activity, body condition and any possible sterilization.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount depends mainly on actual weight, activity and the energy density of the food. With this very lively terrier, it is better to think in terms of body condition and gradually adjust the ration rather than overfeed for convenience.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 6 kg | 105 - 125 g | 2 |
| 7 - 8 kg | 120 - 145 g | 2 |
| 9 kg | 135 - 160 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any dietary transition must be gradual over about a week, mixing the old and the new food in stages. This precaution helps to limit digestive upsets and makes it possible to observe good tolerance of the new ration.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Hydration is particularly important after exercise, in hot weather and in dogs fed mainly with kibble.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats can be useful in training, but they must remain moderate and be counted in the daily energy intake. It is better to favor small, simple and easily digestible rewards.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the ration to avoid excess
- Split into two daily meals
- Adjust the intake on very active days
- Limit fatty and repeated treats
Never give
As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, avocado, cooked bones, alcohol, coffee, xylitol and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or serious metabolic complications.
