A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Choose a suitable growth formula and split the ration into several meals, without promoting overly rapid growth.
Adult : Maintain two daily meals and adjust the quantities to the ideal weight and actual activity.
Senior : Favor an easily digestible diet, moderately energy-dense and adapted to the condition of the joints after veterinary advice.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
A complete, good-quality diet, formulated for an adult dog of medium to large size and suited to moderate activity, is appropriate. For the puppy, a controlled-growth formula helps support steady bone development without excessive weight gain.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily ration must be calculated based on the ideal weight and the energy density of the food, then adjusted according to changes in the silhouette. It is ideally divided into two meals in order to facilitate digestion and limit greediness.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 29 - 31 kg | 320 - 380 g | 2 |
| 32 - 34 kg | 350 - 420 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change of food must be gradual over about one week, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food to reduce the risk of digestive disorders.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Fresh, clean water must remain accessible at all times, especially after walks and in hot weather. An unusually high or low intake warrants veterinary advice.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats should remain occasional, small in size and integrated into the daily energy ration. Low-calorie rewards are preferable during training.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the ration rather than estimating it by eye.
- Split the daily intake into two meals.
- Deduct treats from the daily ration.
- Check weight and body condition every month.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
Never give
Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic in large quantities, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive lesions or pancreatitis.
