A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
Adult : Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.
Senior : Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
A complete, high-quality diet formulated for medium to large dogs with an active lifestyle is generally suitable. The exact choice must take into account age, digestive tolerance, actual activity and the veterinarian's advice.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount must be adjusted according to weight, body condition, the energy density of the food and the intensity of exercise. In this athletic breed, it is better to monitor changes in silhouette and tone rather than apply a fixed ration without reassessment.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 30 - 35 kg | 495 - 677 g | 2 |
| 35 - 40 kg | 565 - 772 g | 2 |
| 40 - 45 kg | 560 - 760 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive disorders. A too abrupt switch from one food to another is not recommended, especially in a sensitive or stressed dog.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. In hot weather or after a long outing, hydration deserves increased attention.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats should remain occasional and be included in the overall energy intake. In the Saarloos Wolfdog, they are especially useful as reinforcement in calm, well-structured training work.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
- Avoid intense exertion just before and after the meal.
- Deduct training treats from the daily ration.
Never give
As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, cooked bones, alcohol, xylitol and very fatty foods, as they can cause poisoning or sometimes serious digestive disorders.
