A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : A growth diet for a large dog helps support bone and muscle development without excess energy.
Adult : The ration must cover endurance and daily activity while maintaining an athletic silhouette.
Senior : With age, the food can be adapted to preserve mobility, muscle mass, and digestive comfort.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
High-end kibble for a large active dog generally provides a practical and suitable base, provided you choose a highly digestible formula that is consistent with its level of exertion. In sensitive individuals, the veterinarian may recommend a more targeted food.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount varies significantly depending on size, activity and individual metabolism. It is preferable to base it on body condition and the manufacturer's recommendations, then adjust with the veterinarian if needed.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 29 - 36 kg | 495 - 677 g | 2 |
| 36 - 43 kg | 593 - 810 g | 2 |
| 43 - 50 kg | 608 - 824 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change in diet must be done gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A slow transition makes it possible to assess tolerance of the new formula and to adjust the ration more calmly.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must be available at all times, especially after exercise, in hot weather and when traveling. Good hydration contributes to overall comfort and recovery.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats can be useful for training, but they must remain measured and included in the calculation of the total ration. It is better to favor simple, digestible rewards that are easy to portion.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Split the daily ration into 2 meals.
- Adjust the quantities according to actual activity and body condition.
- Avoid intense exercise right after the meal.
- Weigh the dog regularly to adjust the ration if necessary.
Never give
As with other dogs, you should avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, avocado, alcohol, cooked bones, sweeteners such as xylitol and very fatty foods, as they can cause severe digestive disorders, poisoning or other serious complications.
