Diet

Feeding your Portuguese Sheepdog well

Portugal

The Portuguese Shepherd can be fed with high-quality kibble suited to its age, its weight and its activity level. Its ration must support its significant energy expenditure without leading to weight gain. The quantities should be adjusted according to its body condition and the recommendations of the manufacturer or the veterinarian.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Choose a complete food for the growth of medium-sized dogs and divide the ration into several meals according to age.

  • Adult : Adjust the energy intake to the actual activity and preferably split the daily ration into two meals.

  • Senior : Monitor weight, muscle mass and mobility, then adjust the energy density with the veterinarian.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

A complete, quality diet, formulated for a medium-sized and active dog, is suitable for the majority of individuals. It must provide good-quality animal proteins, an energy content consistent with daily exercise and an appropriate balance of minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount depends on weight, age, neutering, work intensity and the energy density of the food. The ration must be weighed and reassessed regularly based on body condition, with the veterinarian’s advice for a very athletic dog or one with particular needs.

WeightDaily amountMeals/day

20 - 24 kg348 - 478 g2
24 - 27 kg394 - 541 g2

Change

Managing the food transition

Any change in diet must be gradual, generally over about a week, by gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. This transition limits digestive upsets and makes it possible to check good tolerance of the new ration.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Vigilance must be increased after exertion, during travel and in hot weather, without letting the dog gulp down a very large quantity abruptly just after intense activity.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats can support the training of this work-motivated dog, but they must remain small and be integrated into the daily energy intake. Simple rewards or part of the usual ration help to limit excesses.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh the daily ration rather than giving it by eye.
  • Adjust the quantities to days of intense work and to calmer periods.
  • Avoid intense exercise just before and just after the meal.
  • Regularly check the silhouette and weight.

Never give

Chocolate, fresh or dried grapes, onion, garlic in toxic quantities, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts and cooked bones must be kept out of reach. These products can cause severe poisoning, digestive, neurological or kidney disorders, or even internal injuries.
