A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Split the ration into several meals and choose a growth diet for large puppies in order to support development without excess energy.
Adult : Adjust the quantity to the activity level and, if needed, split the ration into two meals to improve digestive comfort.
Senior : Monitor muscle mass, weight and the digestibility of the food, with increased monitoring of joints and recovery.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Premium kibble for large active dogs is in practice the simplest solution, provided it offers good nutritional density and excellent digestibility. The formulas must support muscle mass, joints and recovery, without unnecessary excess energy in less active individuals.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily ration must be adjusted according to weight, age, sex, physical activity and body condition. In this large dog, it is preferable to calculate precisely and to reassess the intake as soon as the pace of life changes.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 30 - 48 kg | 500 - 700 g | 1 - 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to avoid digestive upsets. In the Beauceron, this caution is all the more useful since sudden changes in ration can upset a dog already sensitive to gastric disorders.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, especially after exercise and during hot weather. Good hydration contributes to digestive comfort, recovery and the maintenance of effort in this athletic dog.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats must remain useful and measured, preferably integrated into training or mental exercise. They must not unbalance the ration of a large-breed dog whose physical condition must remain stable all year round.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Avoid intense exercise just before and just after meals.
- Weigh the ration to adjust it to the dog's actual activity.
- Favor a premium diet for a large active dog.
- Split the ration if digestive comfort requires it.
Never give
As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, cooked bones, alcohol, xylitol and very fatty foods, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or worsen the risks of bloat.
