Diet

Feeding your Basenji well

Congo

The Basenji needs a balanced, good-quality diet, adapted to its age, its weight, its physical activity and its body condition. As the breed can gain weight, the ration must be monitored carefully.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.

  • Adult : Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.

  • Senior : Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

High-quality complete kibble generally suits the Basenji very well. It must cover the needs of a small active dog, with good digestibility and an energy density adapted to its level of exercise.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily amount must be adjusted according to the dog's size, activity, age and body condition. It is preferable to regularly monitor body condition rather than relying solely on a fixed dose.

Change

Managing the food transition

Any change in diet must be introduced gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets and allow the Basenji to adapt smoothly to its new ration.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. In hot weather, after exercise or during an outdoor stay, it is advisable to be particularly attentive to its hydration.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats can be useful for training, but they must remain occasional and be included in the calculation of the daily ration. It is better to favor small, simple rewards to avoid excess calories.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Split the daily ration into 2 meals.
  • Adjust the quantities to the activity level, age and body condition.
  • Limit treats to avoid weight gain.
  • Introduce any new food gradually.

Never give

As with other dogs, chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, alcohol, xylitol, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders or more serious complications.
