A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : A growth diet for a medium to large breed puppy helps support bone and muscle development without excess energy.
Adult : The ration must be adjusted to the actual activity level, with particular attention during the hunting season or periods of intense sport.
Senior : In older dogs, a more digestible diet with better calorie control helps preserve muscle mass and joint comfort.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Premium complete kibble for active dogs generally suits the English Setter very well. A home-prepared ration can also be considered if it is properly formulated, with a quality animal protein base, digestible starches and suitable vegetables.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount varies according to weight, energy expenditure and the type of diet chosen. In an active adult, the ration is often divided into two meals in order to improve digestive comfort and to better manage exertion.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 25 - 30 kg | 500 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change in diet must be gradual over several days to avoid digestive upsets. It is preferable to increase the proportion of the new food step by step while observing the dog's appetite, stools and general condition.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must be available at all times, all the more so for a sporting dog that expends a lot of energy and readily likes to swim. After exertion, high heat or a hunting outing, hydration must be particularly monitored.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats can be useful for training and motivation, provided they remain moderate and are integrated into the overall ration. It is better to favor simple, digestible rewards suited to an active dog.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Split the daily ration into two meals.
- Adjust the quantities on days of high activity.
- Avoid intense exertion just before and just after the meal.
Never give
As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, alcohol, xylitol, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods, as they can cause serious digestive disorders, poisoning or metabolic complications.
