A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Choose a high-quality growth diet, well divided into portions and suited to steady growth without excess weight gain.
Adult : Adjust the ration to the actual activity level and monitor body condition to prevent weight gain.
Senior : Reassess energy density, joint comfort and digestibility with the veterinarian according to age and physical condition.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
Premium kibble for medium to active dogs generally suits the Samoyed very well, provided it is highly digestible and adapted to its age. A home-prepared ration can also be considered if it is properly balanced with a professional. In all cases, overly rich foods given without controlling quantities should be avoided.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount depends mainly on weight, age, metabolism, sterilization and the actual level of exercise. In this active breed but prone to overweight, the ration must be adjusted regularly according to body shape and not left fixed throughout the year.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 15 - 20 kg | 310 - 425 g | 2 |
| 20 - 25 kg | 355 - 487 g | 2 |
| 25 - 30 kg | 425 - 582 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any change in diet must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. It is preferable to mix the old and the new food, gradually increasing the proportion of the new one. An even more cautious transition may be useful for a sensitive or stressed dog.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
Clean, fresh water must remain accessible at all times, with increased vigilance in hot weather or after exertion. Even though the Samoyed tolerates cold well, it can become dehydrated during sustained activities or in a heated environment. Frequent renewal of the water is recommended.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats should remain occasional and represent a small part of the daily energy intake. They are useful for training if they are simple, digestible and counted in the total ration. Excesses quickly promote weight gain in this breed.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the ration rather than measuring it approximately.
- Split meals into at least two servings per day.
- Adjust the ration during periods of reduced activity.
- Include treats in the calculation of daily intake.
- Monitor changes in weight and body shape each month.
Never give
As with other dogs, you should avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, avocado, cooked bones, alcohol, yeast dough, xylitol and very fatty or very salty foods, as they can cause digestive, neurological, kidney disorders or sometimes severe poisoning.
