Alentejo Mastiff: temperament, price, health, and breeders

The Mâtin de l'Alentejo is an ancient Portuguese guard breed, traditionally used to protect herds and farms in the plains of Alentejo. According to various sources, it is said to descend from molossers that came from the Middle East. Its courage, its frugality and its great reliability have forged its reputation as a rural protection dog. The breed is recognized by the FCI in group 2 under number 96 since 1954.

The Mâtin de l'Alentejo is a large-sized dog, powerful, rustic and well muscled, whose body fits into a rectangle. The topline is straight, the chest is well let down and the head, massive without excessive heaviness, remains proportionate to the whole. The coat is short to medium-length, thick, dense and smooth. The coat can be black, wolf grey, fawn or yellow with white markings, or white with markings of these colors, with or without brindling.

Calm, self-assured and protective, the Mâtin de l'Alentejo has a very strong sense of territory. He is affectionate and deeply attached to his family, while naturally remaining wary of strangers. His temperament makes him a very good guardian, vigilant without being needlessly aggressive.

On a daily basis, this dog appreciates a stable setting, space and clear reference points. He is not hyperactive, but he needs regular outings to let off steam and stay balanced. His gait is rather heavy and composed, and he often prefers to observe and control his environment rather than multiply demonstrations of excitement.

His training must be conducted with firmness, consistency and gentleness. Intelligent and courageous, he learns well when he is encouraged and rewarded, but his natural wariness and his independence require serious socialization from the earliest age. Brutality is counter-productive with this strong-willed breed.

The price of a Mâtin de l'Alentejo varies depending on the lineage, the seriousness of the breeding, the screenings and the socialization. The maintenance budget (food, veterinary, training) often exceeds the purchase price over time.

The Mâtin de l'Alentejo is generally considered a hardy and resilient dog. Like many large dogs, it nevertheless requires careful monitoring of the musculoskeletal system and prudent management of meals and exertion in order to limit certain classic risks of large-format breeds.

The Mâtin de l'Alentejo needs a complete and well-balanced diet, adapted to its size, age and activity level. As with other large dogs, nutritional quality, digestibility and control of energy intake take precedence over simple quantity.

The Mâtin de l'Alentejo is also known under the names Rafeiro de l'Alentejo, Rafeiro do Alentejo and Alentejo Mastiff. Its identity remains closely linked to the great plains of southern Portugal, where it has long been selected to guard herds and protect agricultural properties.
