A menu for every age
Needs change over time
Puppy : Growth must remain steady without excessive energy intake in order to preserve the joints and the development of the skeleton.
Adult : The ration is adjusted according to ideal weight, activity and season, with particular attention to maintaining muscle mass.
Senior : A more digestible and well-balanced diet helps preserve mobility, joint comfort and overall condition.
Which food?
Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?
A complete premium diet for a medium to large-sized dog generally suits the Eurasier very well. The formula must provide good-quality animal proteins, an appropriate energy density and good digestibility. In sensitive subjects, the veterinarian may recommend a more specific diet.
Amounts
How much should you give?
The daily amount depends mainly on adult weight, age, activity, sterilization and the energy density of the chosen food. It is preferable to adjust the ration by observing the dog's body condition rather than following a fixed habit all year round.
| Weight | Daily amount | Meals/day |
|---|---|---|
| 18 - 23 kg | 324 - 446 g | 2 |
| 23 - 27 kg | 390 - 535 g | 2 |
| 27 - 32 kg | 455 - 623 g | 2 |
Change
Managing the food transition
Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. The new diet is introduced by gradually increasing its share in the bowl, while monitoring appetite, stools and digestive comfort.
Hydration
Water: do not overlook it
The Eurasier must have permanent access to clean, fresh water. Vigilance increases in hot weather, after exercise and during travel. Good hydration also contributes to overall comfort and proper digestive function.
Little extras
Treats, in moderation
Treats should remain occasional and included in the calculation of the total ration. It is better to favor small, simple and digestible rewards, especially during training, to avoid excess calories and imbalances.
Good habits
For a top-notch bowl
- Weigh the ration regularly to avoid excess.
- Split meals if the dog digests better that way.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and just after the meal.
- Adjust the ration during shedding, heat, or calmer periods.
Never give
As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, avocado, cooked bones, alcohol, caffeine, yeast dough and xylitol-sweetened products should be avoided, as they can cause serious digestive, neurological or cardiac disorders, or even severe poisoning.
