Diet

Feeding your French Bulldog well

France

The French Bulldog needs a balanced, digestible and well-measured diet, as the breed can combine a tendency to be overweight and digestive sensitivity. The quality of the ingredients, the regularity of meals and maintaining an ideal weight matter as much as the quantity served.

A menu for every age

Needs change over time

  • Puppy : Split the ration into 3 to 4 meals per day with a digestible growth food adapted to the small size and to good control of growth.

  • Adult : Preferably serve a maximum of 2 meals per day to better control digestion, satiety and weight.

  • Senior : Adjust the energy intake downward if activity decreases and favor a food supporting mobility, digestion and the maintenance of good muscle mass.

Which food?

Kibble, wet food, or home-cooked diet?

Premium, highly digestible kibble, adapted to the dog's age, size and activity level, is the most common choice. For sensitive dogs, a formula targeting digestion, skin or weight control may be useful with the veterinarian's advice.

Amounts

How much should you give?

The daily ration must be adjusted to the ideal weight, actual activity, sterilization and the energy density of the food. In the French Bulldog, it is preferable to stick to a maximum of 2 meals per day in the adult, with regular monitoring of body condition to avoid any drift toward overweight.

Change

Managing the food transition

Any dietary transition should be done gradually over about a week, or even longer in the most sensitive dogs, in order to limit digestive upsets. It is recommended to increase the new food in stages while observing tolerance in stools and appetite.

Hydration

Water: do not overlook it

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, especially during hot weather. Good hydration helps this brachycephalic dog recover better after walks and contributes to its overall comfort. After exertion or in high heat, you must let it drink calmly and bring it back quickly to a cool place.

Little extras

Treats, in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and always be included in the calculation of the total ration. Simple rewards, low in fat and easy to digest, are preferred, as the breed can be greedy and gain weight quickly.

Good habits

For a top-notch bowl

  • Weigh the ration rather than pouring it in by eye.
  • Generally stick to 2 meals per day for the adult.
  • Strongly limit fatty treats and table scraps.
  • Monitor body condition each month.

Never give

As with all dogs, chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones, yeast dough and very fatty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders, hypoglycemia or obstructions.
