# The Yakutian Laika's health
Russia (Yakutia)
It is a hardy Nordic dog, generally robust, whose health depends mainly on exercise, weight and heat management. As with other spitz, the eyes, hips and the skin under the undercoat deserve monitoring. Responsible breeding avoids inbreeding in a breed that is still not very numerous outside Russia.
Longevity
## Life expectancy
With attentive care, an appropriate diet and good medical follow-up, the Yakutian Laika can live from 10 to 13 years. Longevity depends on the quality of the breeding, the lifestyle and hereditary predispositions.
Constitution
## Is this a robust breed?
Its coat protects it remarkably well from the cold. This endurance to freezing temperatures does not mean that it can stay outside alone without shelter, nor that it tolerates heatwaves. Young dogs must grow without excessive mileage.

## What to look out for
Monitor heatstroke in summer, matted hair under the armpits, watery eyes and any lameness. Excessive vocalizations can also indicate discomfort.
- Heat sensitivity: Its Nordic coat exposes it to heatstroke as soon as exertion and temperature increase.
- Joint disorders: Like many sled dogs, hips and shoulders must be monitored, especially in the young.
- Eye conditions: Some spitz have eye sensitivities that warrant regular check-ups.
- Stress related to isolation: Prolonged solitude encourages howling, destruction and behavioral disorders.
Climate
## Tolerance to cold and heat
Excellent in the cold, fragile in the heat. In summer, outings early in the morning and late in the evening, shade and water. Never shave it close: the undercoat also insulates from the heat.
Weight
## Prone to weight gain
The Yakutian Laika must maintain a silhouette adapted to its morphology, with palpable ribs without excess. The ration must follow the actual activity, age and sterilization. Regular weighing avoids overly significant variations.
Everyday care
## Good habits to keep your pet healthy
- Brush vigorously during shedding to remove dead undercoat.
- Avoid any exertion during hot hours.
- Plan a pulling or running activity several times per week.

## Yakutian Laika vaccinations: schedule
Which vaccines does a Yakutian Laika need? Like all dogs, Yakutian Laikas should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Yakutian Laika vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

Adult Yakutian Laika booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.
