Feeding

# Feeding your West Highland White Terrier well

United Kingdom

The West Highland White Terrier needs a complete, digestible diet adapted to its small size as well as to its activity level. The quality of the ration also plays an important role in the condition of the skin and coat, two sensitive points in the breed.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Split into 3 to 4 meals per day with a growth food for small dogs to support development without excess.
- Adult: Divide the ration into 2 daily meals and adjust it according to activity, body condition and the energy density of the food.
- Senior: Choose a formula that is easier to digest and monitor weight, muscle mass and overall comfort.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium kibble for an active small dog generally suits very well, provided it offers good-quality proteins, controlled energy density and excellent digestibility. In sensitive subjects, a skin and coat-oriented formula may be of interest on veterinary advice.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily ration depends on weight, age, sterilization, activity and the energy density of the chosen food. It is preferably divided into two meals to promote good digestive comfort and better regularity.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 7 - 8 kg | 110 - 130 g | 2 |
| 8 - 9 kg | 120 - 145 g | 2 |
| 9 - 10 kg | 130 - 160 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change of food must be gradual over a period of about one week, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. This transition limits digestive upsets and allows a calmer assessment of skin and digestive tolerance.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Good hydration is particularly important during hot weather, after exercise and in dogs fed exclusively with a dry diet.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can be useful for training, but they must remain moderate and be included in the calculation of the overall ration. It is better to favor small, simple and well-tolerated rewards, given at the right time.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration precisely rather than estimating it by eye.
- Limit treats to avoid excess calorie intake.
- Adapt the food in case of skin sensitivity with the veterinarian's advice.
- Split into two meals for better digestive regularity.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, avocado, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones and yeast dough are dangerous for dogs and can cause severe digestive, neurological, blood or kidney disorders. In case of ingestion, you should quickly contact a veterinarian.
