Health

# The Tibetan Terrier's health

Tibet

The Tibetan Terrier is overall a hardy and resilient dog. Its solid build allows it to cope well with an active lifestyle and cool weather conditions, but this does not rule out regular veterinary follow-up and vigilance regarding certain conditions known in the breed.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

The Tibetan Terrier generally has a good longevity when it benefits from a suitable diet, a stable weight, rigorous coat care and regular preventive monitoring.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

This breed is reputed to be sturdy and rather hardy. It tolerates cold and bad weather well thanks to its abundant coat and its good overall hardiness, while still remaining dependent on serious maintenance to keep skin, eyes and joints in good condition.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

As with many medium-sized dogs, prevention is based on regular observation of locomotion, vision, skin, and overall condition. Particular attention must be paid to lineage history and the choice of a rigorous breeding program.

- Retinal vascularization abnormalities: These eye conditions may progress gradually and, in some cases, compromise vision in the medium or long term.
- Hip dysplasia: This joint condition can cause locomotor discomfort, pain, and premature wear of the joint depending on its severity.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Tibetan Terrier tolerates cold and bad weather well thanks to its abundant double coat. In hot periods, you must make sure to limit exertion to the cooler hours, maintain good hydration and avoid overheated environments.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Monitoring weight remains important to protect the joints and maintain good mobility. A ration adjusted to actual activity, combined with daily outings, helps to limit weight gain.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Regularly monitor the eyes and any change in vision.
- Consult in case of lameness, stiffness or decreased activity.
- Carefully maintain the coat and check the skin under the undercoat.

Vaccination

## Tibetan Terrier vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Tibetan Terrier need? Like all dogs, Tibetan Terriers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Tibetan Terrier vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Tibetan Terrier booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Tibetan Terrier

A standard veterinary follow-up, supplemented if necessary by an orthopedic evaluation and an ophthalmological check depending on the history, helps to detect early the problems likely to affect the breed.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
