Health

# The Tibetan Mastiff's health

China

The Tibetan Mastiff is known to be robust and resilient, with a solid constitution suited to harsh conditions. This does not exempt it from careful veterinary monitoring, as certain conditions must be watched throughout its life, particularly in a dog of this size.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy of about 10 to 14 years, the Tibetan Mastiff falls within a respectable range for a giant dog. The quality of breeding, control of growth, measured exercise and orthopedic prevention play an important role in its longevity.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its overall robustness is good, especially when it comes from a seriously selected line and is kept in conditions suited to its size and coat. Like many large dogs, it nevertheless requires particular vigilance regarding the joints and general condition as it gets older.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Prevention is based on regular monitoring, well-managed growth and observation of the skin, eyes and locomotion. Any drop in condition, lameness, neurological episode or persistent skin irritation warrants prompt veterinary advice.

- Hip dysplasia: As with other large dogs, this joint condition must be monitored, especially during growth and in heavy individuals.
- Epilepsy: Seizures may occur and require a veterinary diagnosis as well as appropriate follow-up.
- Demodicosis: This follicular mange manifests as skin disorders that require prompt care.
- Eye diseases: Certain eye conditions are described in the breed and warrant regular monitoring.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Tibetan Mastiff tolerates cold very well thanks to its abundant undercoat and its protective coat. On the other hand, heat suits it less well and requires limiting exertion to cool hours, ensuring shaded areas, and maintaining constant hydration.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The tendency to gain weight is rather low, but the diet must remain controlled so as not to overload a skeleton already heavily stressed by the dog's large size. A ration adapted to its age, its activity and its body condition remains essential.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor gait, especially during growth and in heavy adults.
- Maintain a stable weight to limit the load on the joints.
- Regularly check the condition of the eyes and skin.
- Consult promptly in case of a seizure, lameness, or unusual fatigue.

Vaccination

## Tibetan Mastiff vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Tibetan Mastiff need? Like all dogs, Tibetan Mastiffs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Tibetan Mastiff vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Tibetan Mastiff booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Tibetan Mastiff

Hip screening, an ophthalmological examination and dermatological monitoring are particularly relevant in this breed. In young dogs as in adults, assessing growth, gait and general condition helps to detect the most common problems early.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
