Health

# The Swiss Hound's health

Switzerland

The Swiss Hound generally enjoys fairly robust health and does not show any major predisposition widely reported across the breed. As with any active dog with drooping ears, regular monitoring nevertheless remains important to limit minor problems related to the environment, outdoor activity and ear hygiene.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With good living conditions, a suitable diet and regular activity, the Swiss Hound generally lives between 12 and 14 years. Its longevity is respectable for a scenthound of this size, especially when it maintains a stable weight and preventive veterinary follow-up.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

It is a hardy and enduring dog, selected to work outdoors for long periods. This robustness does not exempt from paying attention to recovery, the condition of the paw pads, and care after outings in the countryside or in the undergrowth.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Health vigilance focuses mainly on the routine care of an active dog rather than on a specific breed fragility. Regular checks of the ears, paw pads, skin and general condition after outings are particularly useful in this field dog.

- Otitis: Long, drooping ears require regular hygiene to limit moisture, debris and inflammation of the ear canal.
- External parasites: Frequent outings in natural environments increase exposure to ticks, fleas and other parasites, which justifies appropriate prevention.
- Paw pad irritations: An active dog on varied terrain may show sensitivities or small lesions of the paw pads after repeated exertion.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Swiss Hound tolerates cool temperatures fairly well, but it is less comfortable in hot weather. During hot periods, activities must be shifted to the coolest hours and intense exertion must be limited.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This breed is not particularly known for a strong tendency to become overweight, but a decrease in activity or poorly adjusted portions can quickly throw its condition off balance. Weight monitoring, measured feeding and daily exercise help maintain its endurance dog's physique.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Check the ears after outings
- Inspect the paw pads and remove debris
- Maintain regular parasite prevention
- Schedule an annual veterinary check-up

Vaccination

## Swiss Hound vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Swiss Hound need? Like all dogs, Swiss Hounds should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Swiss Hound vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Swiss Hound booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Swiss Hound

An annual veterinary check-up, monitoring of the ears and teeth, as well as a check of the general physical condition are recommended. For a hunting or outdoor dog, it is also useful to regularly check the skin, the paw pads and the possible presence of external parasites.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
