Feeding

# Feeding your Swiss Hound well

Switzerland

The Swiss Hound needs a balanced, rich diet adapted to its age, size and above all its activity level. The ration must support endurance without promoting weight gain.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Split the ration into several meals and choose a growth food suited to its development.
- Adult: Adjust the energy intake according to daily activity and maintain two meals per day.
- Senior: Monitor weight, muscle mass and the digestibility of the food as age advances.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Complete, good-quality kibble for an active medium-sized dog is generally well suited. The composition should prioritize digestible proteins, an energy intake consistent with the effort, and good digestive tolerance.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

Quantities must be adjusted according to actual weight, daily physical exertion, the season and physiological status. A dog that hunts or expends a lot of energy will not have the same needs as an individual living more calmly out of season.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 15 - 18 kg | 220 - 280 g | 2 |
| 18 - 20 kg | 260 - 320 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A slow transition makes it possible to check good tolerance of the new diet and to adjust the ration if needed.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, with increased vigilance after exertion, in hot weather or after a long outing. Hydration is essential for this active dog.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats must remain occasional and be included in the calculation of the daily ration. They can be useful in training, provided they remain simple, digestible and low in calories.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration to avoid discrepancies
- Adjust the intake to hunting periods or intense activity
- Avoid sustained exertion right after the meal

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, avocado, alcohol, cooked bones and very fatty or sugary foods, as they can cause serious digestive disorders or sometimes severe poisoning.
