Health

# The Slovak Cuvac's health

Slovakia

The Slovak Tchouvatch is generally considered a robust and hardy dog. The breed does not present a long list of frequently reported hereditary conditions, but its large size requires particular attention to the musculoskeletal system, especially during growth and in adulthood.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy around 11 to 13 years, the Slovak Cuvac is in the good average for large mountain dogs. A balanced diet, controlled weight, regular exercise without excess and serious veterinary follow-up help preserve its longevity.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Rustic in its type, well protected by a dense coat and selected for outdoor work, the Slovak Cuvac copes well with demanding living conditions when it is properly cared for. Its robustness does not, however, dispense with orthopedic monitoring, especially in young growing dogs.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Vigilance mainly concerns the joints and the management of growth in this large dog. It is also advisable to regularly check the condition of the coat, ears, eyes, paw pads and to monitor the appearance of weight gain that would increase mechanical strain.

- Hip dysplasia: A developmental defect of the hip joint can occur in large dogs and cause pain, lameness, or long-term osteoarthritis.
- Elbow dysplasia: This orthopedic condition can affect large dogs and requires early detection to limit the impact on mobility.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Slovak Cuvac tolerates cold very well thanks to its dense coat and abundant undercoat. On the other hand, it tolerates heat less well and must have shade, fresh water and activities limited to the mildest hours in summer.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Maintaining a stable weight is essential to preserve its joints. Portions must be adapted to its age, its actual size and its activity level, without excess treats. In the puppy, steady growth is better than development that is too rapid.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor growth and avoid excessive exertion in the young dog.
- Maintain a stable weight to limit pressure on the joints.
- Regularly examine the coat, ears, eyes and paw pads after outings.
- Seek veterinary advice in case of limping, stiffness or reduced mobility.

Vaccination

## Slovak Cuvac vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Slovak Cuvac need? Like all dogs, Slovak Cuvacs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Slovak Cuvac vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Slovak Cuvac booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Slovak Cuvac

Careful orthopedic monitoring is relevant, with particular attention to the hips and, depending on the lines, to the elbows. Before breeding or in a dog intended for sustained activity, veterinary check-ups focused on the musculoskeletal system are recommended.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
