Health

# The Siberian Husky's health

Russia

The Siberian Husky is generally a robust dog, selected for endurance and work in demanding environments. However, it remains exposed to certain hereditary or breed-related conditions, particularly affecting the eyes and joints, which justifies serious veterinary monitoring and a rigorous breeding choice.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy of 11 to 13 years, the Siberian Husky is in a good average for a dog of its size. Its lifestyle, the quality of its diet, maintaining a stable weight and the absence of poorly managed exertion during growth directly influence its longevity.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

This Nordic dog is known for its great physical endurance and its good overall resistance. It tolerates the cold well thanks to its dense coat, but it requires careful management during high heat and during intense efforts in summer.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Vigilance must above all focus on ocular conditions, orthopedic follow-up and the prevention of disorders linked to poorly adapted activity. A well-selected, well-maintained Husky kept at a good level of fitness generally retains a good quality of life.

- Progressive retinal atrophy: Hereditary eye condition that can lead to a progressive decline in vision.
- Cataract: Clouding of the lens that may impair vision and sometimes require specialized care.
- Hip dysplasia: Joint development abnormality that can cause pain, lameness, and early wear.
- Corneal dystrophy: Corneal disorder requiring veterinary ophthalmologic follow-up depending on its progression.
- Epilepsy: Neurological disorder manifested by seizures requiring appropriate diagnosis and follow-up.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Siberian Husky tolerates cold and harsh climates very well. On the other hand, its thick coat makes it more sensitive to high heat, which requires favoring outings during cool hours, permanent access to water and avoiding sustained exertion in the middle of summer.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Very active, the Siberian Husky generally remains rather lean when it expends enough energy, but a decrease in activity combined with a diet that is too rich can quickly unbalance its body condition. Portion control, regular evaluation of the silhouette and daily exercise are important.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the eyes checked regularly, especially if there is a history in the lineage.
- Maintain a stable weight to limit strain on the joints.
- Adapt exercise during growth to preserve the locomotor system.
- Check the skin, ears, and coat condition often during shedding periods.

Vaccination

## Siberian Husky vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Siberian Husky need? Like all dogs, Siberian Huskys should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Siberian Husky vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Siberian Husky booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Siberian Husky

Before breeding as well as before purchase, it is wise to check hip and eye screenings. Careful veterinary follow-up also makes it possible to detect certain hereditary conditions earlier and to adjust activity or diet if necessary.
