Feeding

# Feeding your Shikoku well

Japan

The Shikoku needs a complete, balanced, good-quality diet, adapted to its age, its physical activity and its medium size. A very active dog will not have the same needs as a calmer or neutered individual, hence the benefit of adjusting the ration on a case-by-case basis.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: The diet must support steady growth without excess energy in order to preserve joint development.
- Adult: The ration must be adjusted to the dog's actual activity, with particular vigilance in very athletic subjects or, on the contrary, those that expend less energy.
- Senior: When activity decreases, a more digestible and less caloric formula can help preserve weight, mobility and overall comfort.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium complete kibble for a medium-sized and active dog generally suits well, provided that the composition is digestible and adapted to its activity level. A home-prepared or mixed ration remains possible if it is formulated with a veterinarian to avoid imbalances.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount varies according to weight, activity, age and the energy density of the food. In this breed, it is better to base it on body condition, stool quality and maintenance of muscle mass rather than on a fixed standard amount.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 16 - 19 kg | 312 - 428 g | 2 |
| 19 - 23 kg | 334 - 459 g | 2 |
| 23 - 26 kg | 380 - 522 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A slow transition is particularly useful in sensitive dogs or when switching to a more energy-dense or richer food.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

The Shikoku must have clean, fresh water available at all times, with increased attention after exercise, in summer and during dry meals. A decrease in water consumption or signs of fatigue after exertion justify prompt monitoring.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can help with training, but they must remain moderate and integrated into the daily ration. With a willing but independent dog like the Shikoku, it is preferable to use simple, very palatable rewards given at the right time.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh portions rather than estimating them by eye.
- Split meals if the dog eats too fast or has difficulty digesting.
- Reduce the portion on less active days and after a lasting decrease in exercise.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, cooked bones and very fatty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or veterinary emergencies.
