Health

# The Shar-Pei's health

China

The Shar-Pei has a health profile that must be monitored carefully despite its rustic appearance. Its skin folds and the sensitivity of its skin require rigorous care, and the breed is predisposed to several ocular, dermatological, joint and metabolic conditions. Regular veterinary follow-up and serious breeding selection are essential.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

The life expectancy of the Shar-Pei is generally between 8 and 10 years. This longevity remains decent for a dog of this size, but it depends greatly on the quality of the breeding, weight management, monitoring of the eyes and skin, as well as screening for hereditary conditions.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Shar-Pei is not the most robust breed from a health standpoint. Its skin, its eyes and certain hereditary predispositions require constant vigilance, especially since it tolerates marked climatic changes poorly and may show a tendency to become overweight if its activity remains too low.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Particular attention must be paid to the condition of the skin folds, the eyes, body weight and the appearance of abnormal inflammatory or digestive signs. In this breed, prevention matters as much as treatment, because certain conditions can progress quickly if they are not detected early.

- Entropion: The inward rolling of the eyelid can irritate the cornea and sometimes requires prompt correction.
- Ectropion: The outward turning of the eyelid exposes the eye more to irritation and infections.
- Shar-Pei familial fever: This inflammatory condition specific to the breed manifests as febrile episodes and requires careful veterinary monitoring.
- Hypothyroidism: A hormonal disorder that can lead to fatigue, weight gain, and skin changes.
- Hip and elbow dysplasia: These joint abnormalities can hinder movement and promote osteoarthritis.
- Gastric torsion: A rarer but serious life-threatening emergency, promoted by certain dietary or anatomical contexts.
- Skin conditions: Atopy, pyoderma, demodicosis, cutaneous mucinosis, and seborrhea are promoted by the sensitivity of the skin and folds.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Shar-Pei does not tolerate heat well and only moderately tolerates cold. Living indoors is generally preferable, with outings adapted to the mildest hours and increased vigilance during hot spells or sudden changes in weather.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Shar-Pei may tend to gain weight if its energy intake is too high compared to its actual activity. A precisely measured ration, monitoring of the body shape and regular daily outings are important to limit excess weight, which also worsens joint strain.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Inspect and dry the skin folds carefully.
- Monitor the eyes and consult quickly at the slightest sign of irritation.
- Regularly monitor weight and body shape.
- Plan a regular veterinary follow-up with targeted screenings.

Vaccination

## Shar-Pei vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Shar-Pei need? Like all dogs, Shar-Peis should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Shar-Pei vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Shar-Pei booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Shar-Pei

Screenings targeting the hips, elbows, knees, eyes and thyroid are particularly relevant in this breed. They help to better select breeding dogs and to detect early certain conditions to which the Shar-Pei is exposed.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
