Health

# The Schnauzer's health

Germany

The Schnauzer is overall a hardy and resilient breed, with good tolerance to climatic variations and a solid constitution when it comes from a reputable breeding program. As with many medium-sized dogs, prevention involves sensible selection, regular veterinary follow-up, an appropriate diet and attentive care of the eyes, ears and body weight.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With good lifestyle hygiene, the Schnauzer often lives between 12 and 14 years. This decent longevity is observed especially in well-maintained dogs, properly fed and followed preventively throughout their adult and senior life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

A rustic breed, the Schnauzer generally tolerates exertion and the seasons well, provided it benefits from regular maintenance of its coat and a balanced lifestyle. Its robustness does not, however, exempt it from vigilance regarding certain ocular, endocrine or urinary predispositions reported in the canine literature and breed sheets.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Even though the breed is known to be robust, it is important to monitor any change in vision, urination, appetite or general condition. Early management clearly improves quality of life and helps to limit the impact of conditions that may appear in some individuals.

- Eye conditions: Certain eye issues may appear in some individuals and warrant prompt veterinary monitoring at the slightest sign of visual discomfort or irritation.
- Urinary disorders: The breed is sometimes mentioned for certain urinary sensitivities, hence the value of good hydration and follow-up in case of abnormal urination.
- Hypothyroidism: This endocrine condition can cause fatigue, weight gain or coat deterioration and requires a veterinary diagnosis followed by long-term treatment.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Schnauzer tolerates cold rather well as well as moderate heat thanks to its robust constitution and its protective coat. In hot periods, outings must remain reasonable during the least hot hours and access to fresh water must be permanent. In winter, it resists well, but prolonged exposure to humidity or discomfort must be avoided.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Schnauzer may tend to gain weight if its portions are not adjusted to its activity level. Regular monitoring of its body shape, measured meals, and sufficient daily exercise are the best levers to maintain its condition and relieve its joints over time.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Check the eyes and ears every week.
- Maintain a stable weight all year round.
- Consult promptly in case of changes in urination or unusual fatigue.
- Schedule a veterinary check-up at least once a year.

Vaccination

## Schnauzer vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Schnauzer need? Like all dogs, Schnauzers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Schnauzer vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Schnauzer booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Schnauzer

An annual veterinary follow-up, supplemented depending on the dog's age and profile by eye, urinary and thyroid check-ups, helps to detect early the disorders most often mentioned in the breed. Regular examination of the ears, skin and oral cavity is also part of good habits.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
