Feeding

# Feeding your Schnauzer well

Germany

The Schnauzer needs a complete and well-balanced diet, adapted to its age, its weight, its activity level and its physiological status. Protein quality, digestibility and control of energy intake are particularly important in this active dog but sometimes prone to being overweight.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: A growth diet for a medium-sized puppy is recommended, with several small meals per day and careful monitoring of the weight curve.
- Adult: The adult needs a stable, measured ration adapted to its activity level to preserve its muscle mass without promoting overweight.
- Senior: In the senior dog, a more digestible and moderately energy-dense formula helps preserve overall comfort, mobility and body condition.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium kibble for an active medium-sized dog generally suits the Schnauzer very well, provided it is rich in good-quality animal proteins and properly balanced in fats. A home-prepared ration can also be considered, but it must then be formulated with a veterinarian to remain complete and consistent.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount depends on weight, metabolism, actual activity and the energy density of the chosen food. In adults, the ration is most often divided into 2 meals in order to improve digestive comfort and limit snacking.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 15 kg | 180 - 220 g | 2 |
| 15 - 18 kg | 200 - 250 g | 2 |
| 18 - 20 kg | 230 - 280 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be gradual over 7 to 10 days in order to limit digestive upsets. It is preferable to gradually increase the proportion of the new food while observing the stools, appetite and the dog's general condition.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, especially after exercise, in hot weather or with a dry diet. Good hydration contributes to overall comfort and also supports urinary function.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be included in the total daily ration. They are useful for the Schnauzer's training, but it is preferable to choose simple, digestible and low-fat rewards so as not to unbalance its intake.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration instead of pouring it by eye.
- Split the adult ration into 2 meals per day.
- Adjust the quantity after a decrease or an increase in activity.
- Regularly monitor stool condition and body shape.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, you should avoid chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, avocado, cooked bones, alcohol, xylitol and very fatty or very salty foods, as they can cause digestive, neurological, blood or metabolic disorders that are sometimes serious.
