Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Standard Schnauzer originates from southern Germany, with roots often located between Bavaria and the Austrian Tyrol. Descended from old farm dogs and terrier-type dogs, it was first used for guarding stables, protecting teams and hunting rodents. Long known as the Wire-haired Pinscher, it gradually took the name Schnauzer in reference to its characteristic bearded muzzle. The breed has been recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale since 1955.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Schnauzer is a medium-sized dog, robust and compact, whose body fits almost into a square. Its head is long and strong, with a flat forehead, bushy eyebrows and a pronounced beard that give it a lively and determined expression. Its coat is harsh, lying flat and well furnished, with a dense undercoat. The best-known coat colors are solid black and pepper and salt, but there are also black and silver or white subjects depending on the lines and standards mentioned by certain sources.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

The Schnauzer is a lively, balanced dog and very attached to its family. It is loyal, attentive and naturally protective without being aggressive when it is well socialized. Calm at home but always alert, it remains wary of strangers and has a true guard temperament. It appreciates family life, likes to take part in daily activities and often maintains a lovely bond with children.

Playful Intelligent Sociable Protective

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, the Schnauzer needs regular interactions, sustained walks and activities that stimulate its intelligence. It copes poorly with prolonged boredom and can become stubborn or pushy if it lacks exercise or structure. Although it can live in an apartment with sufficient outings, it prefers an environment where it can stay active. Its watchful instinct and its past as a working dog drive it to observe, alert and protect its territory with discernment.

Training

## Training and socialization

The Schnauzer’s training must be early, consistent and firm without brutality. It is an intelligent dog that understands quickly, but its assertive temperament requires clear rules and a relationship based on trust. Positive methods, combined with good socialization and varied exercises, generally give very good results. It is advisable to channel early its tendency to want to decide for itself, especially in the most self-confident individuals.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Schnauzer

The price of a Schnauzer varies mainly depending on the origin of the bloodline, the reputation of the breeding kennel, conformity to the standard and the quality of the follow-up offered. Beyond the purchase price, you must factor in the annual budget for upkeep, health, food and grooming.

Health

## Health at a glance

The Schnauzer is overall a hardy and resilient breed, with good tolerance to climatic variations and a solid constitution when it comes from a reputable breeding program. As with many medium-sized dogs, prevention involves sensible selection, regular veterinary follow-up, an appropriate diet and attentive care of the eyes, ears and body weight.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

The Schnauzer needs a complete and well-balanced diet, adapted to its age, its weight, its activity level and its physiological status. Protein quality, digestibility and control of energy intake are particularly important in this active dog but sometimes prone to being overweight.

## Fun facts and popularity

The Standard Schnauzer is the original variety from which the Miniature Schnauzer and the Giant Schnauzer were developed. Its beard and bushy eyebrows are among its most recognizable features and give it its very distinctive expressive look. Historically, it accompanied coachmen and readily lived in contact with horses in stables, where it helped protect the premises and hunt rodents.
