Feeding

# Feeding your Schapendoes well

Netherlands

The Schapendoes needs a good-quality diet, adapted to its age, body condition and activity level. A well-adjusted ration supports its muscle mass, endurance and the quality of its coat.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
- Adult: Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.
- Senior: Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium complete kibble or a home-prepared ration correctly formulated by a professional may be suitable, provided it delivers a good energy balance and quality proteins. The choice of food must take into account the lifestyle and any possible digestive sensitivity of each dog.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount must be adjusted according to actual weight, activity, age and body condition. A very active dog will not have the same needs as a calmer subject living mostly indoors.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 13 - 15 kg | 251 - 344 g | 2 |
| 15 - 16 kg | 278 - 381 g | 2 |
| 16 - 18 kg | 304 - 417 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. Introducing the new food in stages makes it possible to observe tolerance and adjust the ration if necessary.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Particular attention is useful after exercise, in hot weather and for dogs fed mainly with a dry diet.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can be useful for training and motivation, but they must remain moderate and integrated into the overall energy intake. Favor simple and easily digestible rewards.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
- Deduct training treats from the daily ration.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, you should avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones and very fatty foods, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or veterinary emergencies.
