Feeding

# Feeding your Pug well

China

The Pug needs good-quality food adapted to its small size, its moderate activity level and its tendency to be overweight. The goal is to meet its needs without excess energy, while supporting its muscle mass and overall comfort. A stable, well-tolerated diet is often preferable for this sometimes sensitive dog.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
- Adult: Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to the ideal weight and actual activity.
- Senior: Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Complete premium kibble for small adult dogs, with controlled energy density and good digestibility, generally suits the Pug well. Depending on its age, body condition, or any digestive or skin sensitivity, the veterinarian may recommend a more specific formula. Protein quality and precise portions matter more than simple quantity.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The quantity must be adjusted according to the ideal weight, age, sterilization, actual activity and the caloric density of the chosen food. In the Pug, it is better to be precise and regularly reassess the ration rather than feed by eye, because a few repeated excesses are enough to promote overweight.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 6 kg | 105 - 125 g | 2 |
| 6 - 7 kg | 115 - 140 g | 2 |
| 7 - 8 kg | 130 - 155 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets and help the dog accept its new ration. A transition spread over about a week, or even a little longer for sensitive individuals, is generally preferable.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

The Pug must always have access to clean, fresh water. Hydration is particularly important in hot weather, after a walk and for any dog that pants easily. In the summer period, you must be extra vigilant because this breed tolerates heat poorly.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and counted in the daily ration. They can be useful for positive training, but excess quickly promotes weight gain in this breed. Small, simple, low-calorie rewards should be preferred.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Divide the daily ration into 2 meals for better appetite management.
- Weigh the kibble rather than serving at random.
- Strictly limit table scraps.
- Choose small, low-calorie treats.
- Reassess the ration after sterilization or decreased activity.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, you should avoid chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, avocado, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods. These products can cause digestive, neurological, kidney or metabolic disorders that are sometimes serious.
