Health

# The Posavac Hound's health

Croatia

The Posavatz Hound is overall a robust dog, endowed with good general resistance. Like many active dogs with drooping ears and of medium to medium-large size, it mainly requires joint and ear vigilance, without being considered a fragile breed.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy around 10 to 12 years, this breed is in the good average for medium-sized scenthounds. Longevity depends greatly on the quality of the breeding, weight control, level of exercise and regular veterinary follow-up.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its build is solid and well suited to an active life. It tolerates prolonged exertion and frequent outings fairly well, provided it is properly maintained and not left overweight or undertrained.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Monitoring should mainly focus on the joints and the ears. A dog bought from a reputable breeder with screened breeding dogs, kept at a proper weight and followed regularly, has a good chance of maintaining a good quality of life over time.

- Hip dysplasia: A joint malformation that can cause pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, especially if weight and activity are not well managed.
- Elbow dysplasia: A developmental elbow condition likely to cause lameness and discomfort, with particular emphasis on screening in breeding dogs.
- Ear infections: Its floppy ears promote moisture retention and require regular checks and cleaning to limit inflammation of the ear canal.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Posavatz Hound tolerates moderate cold rather well thanks to its good hardiness, but its short coat requires vigilance in the event of prolonged low temperatures. It copes correctly with temperate heat if the activity is adapted, with outings during cool hours, shade and water available.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

His appetite must remain in line with his activity level. A scenthound that does not get enough exercise can gain weight, which increases strain on the joints and reduces his endurance. Regular weighing, measured portions and counted treats help maintain an athletic build.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Check and clean the ears regularly.
- Maintain a stable weight to protect the joints.
- Consult promptly in case of limping or discomfort during exertion.
- Plan an annual veterinary check-up and preventive booster shots.

Vaccination

## Posavac Hound vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Posavac Hound need? Like all dogs, Posavac Hounds should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Posavac Hound vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Posavac Hound booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Posavac Hound

Screening of hips and elbows in breeding dogs is recommended. In practice, orthopedic follow-up in case of lameness, regular ear checks and routine veterinary examinations make it possible to detect early the problems most relevant to the breed.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
