Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is one of the oldest French spaniels. Its historical cradle is located in Normandy, around Pont-Audemer and the Vernier marsh, where it was selected for hunting waterfowl. Very at ease in marshes and deep waters, it has built a reputation as a courageous pointing dog and effective at retrieving. The breed almost disappeared after the two world wars, then was preserved by a few passionate breeders. It was definitively recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1954 and remains very rare today.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is a medium-sized pointing dog, stocky and vigorous, whose body fits almost into a square. Its solid silhouette rests on a straight to slightly convex back, a deep and broad chest and a short, muscular loin. Its head is distinguished by a round skull, a long muzzle and above all by its famous tuft of curly silky hair forming a kind of wig on the top of the skull and around the long ears. Its coat is curly, dense and slightly rough, with a solid brown coat or brown and grey roan with dead-leaf highlights.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

Rustic, courageous and attentive, the Pont-Audemer Spaniel combines the qualities of a true hunting dog and those of a gentle companion in everyday life. He is energetic outdoors, willing at work and particularly motivated in water, but he also knows how to be loyal, cheerful and close to his family at home. His balanced temperament, docility and intelligence make him a pleasant dog to live with for an active household that respects his needs.

Affectionate Playful Intelligent Easy to train

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, this dog needs real activity to stay balanced. He likes to explore, sniff, retrieve and share long outings, ideally in natural environments. He tolerates prolonged inactivity poorly and thrives more in the countryside or in a home able to offer frequent physical and mental exercise. Well walked and exercised, he can however remain calm and pleasant indoors.

Training

## Training and socialization

The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is generally considered easy to train thanks to its docility, its attentiveness to humans and its good intelligence. A firm, calm and consistent education, started early, gives excellent results. Early socialization is important, as is work on recall and self-control, especially in a dog selected for hunting. Brutal methods should be avoided, as they may harm its confidence and motivation.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Pont-Audemer Spaniel

The purchase price of this breed remains fairly reasonable for such a rare dog, but availability is limited and depends on the small number of serious breeders. The overall cost must be assessed over time, taking into account food, veterinary follow-up, equipment and the expected level of activity.

Health

## Health at a glance

The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is overall a hardy and solid dog. It does not show any major widely recognized predisposition to a specific genetic disease, which is a real strong point for the breed. Its dense coat protects it well from cold and humidity, but its active lifestyle and its drooping ears require regular vigilance.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

The Pont-Audemer Spaniel needs good-quality food, adapted to its medium size, its often high activity level and its body condition. Its ration must support endurance without promoting overweight, with an adjustment according to the hunting season, age and actual expenditure.

## Fun facts and popularity

The breed is immediately recognizable by its famous wig of curly hair that frames the top of the skull and the ears. It is also one of the rarest French breeds, with a limited population despite the conservation efforts led by enthusiasts. Its profile as a specialist of wetlands gives it a special place among French pointing dogs.
