Health

# The Polish Tatra Sheepdog's health

Poland

The Berger Polonais de Podhale is generally robust and resilient when it benefits from an appropriate diet, regular exercise and preventive veterinary follow-up. As with other large dogs, growth must be controlled and the joints monitored. Its drooping ears also require regular attention in order to limit moisture and inflammation.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its lifespan is usually between 10 and 12 years. Maintaining a stable weight, regular activity without excess during growth, and sensible screening for joint disorders help preserve its quality of life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its solid build, its abundant undercoat and its mountain dog heritage give it good overall resistance. However, this robustness does not exempt it from annual monitoring or controlled growth, because its large size puts heavy strain on the hips and elbows.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Regular veterinary monitoring is particularly useful during growth and then with advancing age. Any lameness, stiffness, decreased activity, weight gain or discomfort in the ears should lead to a consultation without waiting.

- Hip dysplasia: This abnormality in joint development can promote pain and osteoarthritis; screening breeding dogs and growth without excess weight reduce the risks.
- Elbow dysplasia: As in many large dogs, rapid growth or a family predisposition can affect the front joints.
- External ear infections: Drooping ears can retain heat and moisture; regular inspection helps spot redness, odor, or discharge.
- Gastric dilatation-volvulus: Its large size calls for split meals and rest around feeding times; a swollen abdomen with agitation is an emergency.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Its dense double coat protects it very well from cold and bad weather. It tolerates high heat less easily: in summer, activities must be scheduled during the cooler hours, with shade, water and access to a ventilated place. Clipping is not recommended, because the undercoat contributes to thermal regulation.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

An athletic silhouette must be maintained, with ribs perceptible under a thin fat covering and a visible waist. The ration is adjusted according to age, weight, body condition, sterilization and activity level. Treats are included in the daily total and exercise remains progressive in the young dog.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the dog examined by the veterinarian at least once a year.
- Maintain vaccinations and antiparasitic protections according to lifestyle.
- Inspect and clean the ears only with a suitable product.
- Monitor gait, mobility and weight throughout growth.
- Brush weekly and daily during shedding.
- Limit intense activities to cool hours in summer.

Vaccination

## Polish Tatra Sheepdog vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Polish Tatra Sheepdog need? Like all dogs, Polish Tatra Sheepdogs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Polish Tatra Sheepdog vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Polish Tatra Sheepdog booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Polish Tatra Sheepdog

Before breeding, it is recommended to have the hips and elbows evaluated according to official protocols and to carry out a complete clinical examination. Monitoring of the eyes and the heart can complete the assessment depending on the lines and the recommendations of the veterinarian or the breed club. In the puppy, the quality of the parents' health results must be checked with the breeder.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
