Health

# The Peruvian Inca Orchid's health

Peru

Despite the apparent fragility linked to its hairless skin, the Peruvian Hairless Dog generally enjoys robust health. Its skin nevertheless requires regular monitoring and it must be protected from the cold as well as from bad weather.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its life expectancy is generally between 10 and 12 years. Appropriate skin protection and regular veterinary follow-up help preserve its quality of life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The breed shows overall robustness from average to good. Its hairlessness does not mean that it is fragile, but the absence of the coat’s natural protection requires skin care and particular attention to weather conditions.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Careful veterinary monitoring is recommended due to several predispositions reported for the breed. The skin, joints and neurological condition in particular deserve regular observation.

- Epilepsy: This neurological condition is among the major concerns reported for the breed.
- Patellar luxation: This knee condition is mentioned as a minor concern and warrants an orthopedic check.
- Allergies: Allergic reactions may occasionally occur and require veterinary care.
- Functional colopathy: Functional disorders of the colon are reported occasionally.
- Dermatitis: Exposed skin may be prone to inflammation and must be examined and cared for regularly.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The hairless variety must live mainly indoors and be protected from cold, bad weather and harsh climatic conditions. Its tolerance to cold as well as heat is limited, which requires adapting the duration of outings and the protection of the skin.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The quantity of food must be adjusted to the size, age and activity level of the dog. Daily walks and games contribute to maintaining a balanced weight.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Regularly examine the skin and apply a suitable moisturizing care.
- Protect the dog from cold, bad weather and harsh temperatures.
- Frequently check the eyes and ears.
- Brush the teeth regularly and monitor the length of the claws.

Vaccination

## Peruvian Inca Orchid vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Peruvian Inca Orchid need? Like all dogs, Peruvian Inca Orchids should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Peruvian Inca Orchid vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Peruvian Inca Orchid booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Peruvian Inca Orchid

Cardiac monitoring and a check of the knees are recommended. Regular veterinary consultations also make it possible to monitor the skin and to quickly detect any neurological, digestive or allergic sign.
