Feeding

# Feeding your Old English Sheepdog well

United Kingdom

The Bobtail can be given high-quality industrial food or a home-prepared ration formulated with a veterinarian. The priority is to cover the needs of a large active dog without excess calories and to maintain a stable diet, because repeated changes can disrupt its digestive system.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Use a large-breed puppy food, divided into 3 meals, to support steady growth without excess energy.
- Adult: Divide the daily ration into 2 meals and adjust it to the activity level as well as the body condition.
- Senior: Choose a digestible and moderately energy-dense formula, then monitor weight, muscle mass and joint comfort.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Choose a complete food suited to age, weight and activity, with quality animal proteins and a controlled energy density. For the puppy, a formula intended for large-breed dogs helps support gradual growth. A home-prepared ration should only be used after formulation by a veterinarian in order to avoid deficiencies.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The exact amount depends on the caloric density of the food, the activity and the body condition. The manufacturer's guidelines are a starting point that must be adjusted according to changes in weight, ideally with the veterinarian's advice.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 28 - 32 kg | 330 - 400 g | 2 |
| 33 - 36 kg | 380 - 450 g | 2 |
| 37 - 40 kg | 430 - 500 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be gradual over 7 to 10 days, by gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. This precaution is particularly useful for the Bobtail, whose digestion can be sensitive to sudden changes.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times. The bowl must be refilled several times a day in hot weather or after exercise, and the hair around the mouth must be monitored so that it stays clean and dry.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can support training, but they must be small, low in fat and included in the daily calorie intake. Pieces of its usual ration can be used during sessions in order to limit excesses.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the daily ration rather than measuring it by volume.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after meals.
- Maintain a stable diet and make any transition gradually.
- Check body condition each month and adjust the ration if necessary.
- Store food in an airtight container, protected from heat and humidity.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, fresh or dried grapes, onion, garlic, leek, products containing xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders, internal injuries or pancreatitis.
