# Feeding your Norwegian Hound well
Norway
The Norwegian Hound needs a quality, balanced diet adapted to its age, its size as well as its level of physical activity. Its needs increase during hunting periods.
A menu for every age
## Their needs change as they grow
- Puppy: Growth food adapted to the size, in three meals up to six months then two, without calcium supplement or intense exercise.
- Adult: Ration adjusted to ideal weight and activity level, in two meals, with regular monitoring of body shape.
- Senior: Digestible food, less energy-dense, possibly with joint support, while monitoring weight and appetite.
Which food?
## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?
A complete, quality diet, providing an appropriate balance between proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, is suitable for this breed when it is adjusted to its age and its activity.
Portion sizes
## How much should you feed?
The ration must be individualized according to weight, age, body condition and physical expenditure. It can be increased during the hunting period, then gradually brought back to its usual level once the intensive activity is over.

Changing food
## How to switch foods successfully
Any change of food must be gradual over seven to ten days, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food to limit digestive upsets.
Hydration
## Don't overlook water
Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times. Needs increase with heat, exertion and a dry diet. Take water along on walks and offer regular breaks.
A little extra
## Treats in moderation
Treats remain occasional and represent less than 10% of the daily energy intake. They are deducted from the ration in order to avoid weight gain.
Good habits
## Make mealtimes count
- Divide the daily ration into two meals.
- Adapt the diet to age, size and activity level.
- Increase intake during hunting then return to the usual quantities.
### Never feed these foods
Chocolate, grapes, xylitol, onion, garlic, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods are dangerous for the dog. In case of ingestion, contact a veterinarian quickly.
